Scandal Point

Scandal Point

During British rule, the town of Shimla was the summer capital of Himachal Pradesh. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Himalayas, Shimla was and continues to be a bustling community. Naturally, stories surrounding this area have arisen for hundreds of years. Within Shimla is a spot referred to as Scandal Point. Learn all about this fascinating story so that your next trip to Northern India can include a visit to Shimla Ridge.

Telling the Grand Story

The story of Scandal Point has been passed down through the generations. In 1892, Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala, eloped with the British Viceroy's daughter. Scandal Point is where they decided to elope, which is why the location is so famous. In return, the British were outraged at this act, so they banished Singh from Shimla. He responded by creating an entirely new summer capital at Chail.

Reflecting on the True Tale

After further research by local historians, this tale has some inaccuracies. Today, the Maharaja who had an English wife on record was actually Bhupinder Singh's father Rajindra Singh. At the time of the elopement, Bhupinder Singh would've only been a baby.

Historians believe the names were interchanged because of Bhupinder Singh's womanizing habits. With a record of many wives, Singh's notorious behavior fits well with the eloping scenario. Now, historians can correct the story so that Scandal Point has a clear narrative. Regardless of the corrections, visitors and locals enjoy this place and the folklore associated with it.

Finding the Exact Spot

Scandal Point doesn't have a major attraction marking its position on Shimla Ridge. Instead, locals find the exact spot by locating the intersection of the Ridge and Mall roads. Found on the west side of the Shimla Ridge, Scandal Point is the highest point on this hillside. Here, you can look out at the view. Snowy mountains tower above while the deep valley stretches out below you.

To the east, you can also visit the Lala Lajpat Rai statue. It's merely a few steps from Scandal Point, and it serves as a locating landmark for this attraction, too. As a freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai was part of the Indian Independence movement, and he's held in high regard.

Enjoying the Shimla Ridge

Take a bus or taxi along the Mall Road to access Shimla Ridge. Unlike other areas in Northern India, the Ridge isn't usually cut off from access during the winter. For this reason, you can explore Shimla and Scandal Point nearly any time of year. However, the rainy season extending between July through September may not be the best time to walk around the area. Choose spring, early summer or winter for your vacation itinerary.

Shimla and Scandal Point continue to be romantic places to visit on your trip to the state of Himachal Pradesh. Whether you enjoy a spring stroll or a snowy experience at Scandal Point, the Ridge is open year-round. Booking a hotel along the Shimla Ridge is the first step toward enjoying this storied area.
