Overlooking the city of Jammu is a symmetrically designed garden called Bagh-e-Bahu. Initially, visitors might notice it's different than other gardens around the world. As a Mughal garden, Bagh-e-Bahu reflects its historical significance and beauty with intricately designed walkways, water features and more. For a relaxing time along the Tawi River, visit Bagh-e-Bahu on your next trip to Northern India.
Discovering the Classic Mughal-Style Garden
Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, Mughal gardens have distinct elements defining them. At Bagh-e-Bahu, you can see these characteristics, including its terraced design, centralized water canal and symmetrical garden. Essentially, this garden represents a taste of heaven on Earth. Because of its serene landscape, visitors can relax and focus on their spirituality.
Start your garden journey at the topmost terrace. Follow the walkways down the hillside as you marvel at the garden's statues, planted trees and plentiful flowers. The flowing water calms the mind as you look out onto Jammu's city center.
Enjoying the Nighttime Entertainment
Like most Mughal gardens, Bagh-e-Bahu has multiple ponds on several terraces. Notably, the top terrace has an expansive pond with an integrated lighting system. On select nights, the garden comes alive with light shows, fountains and music. Depending on the show, there may be a video about Jammu's history. For anyone curious about local history, the video and show are worth the entry fee.
Walking Through the Underground Aquarium
The garden is even home to an underground aquarium. Enter this attraction by walking into the mouth of a huge fish. Below, explore 24 large aquariums and 13 smaller exhibits. With a mixture of both saltwater and freshwater fish, the aquarium is home to nearly 400 species in total.
In addition, this aquarium has an active laboratory and an in-depth museum dedicated to the world's oceans and other bodies of water. With shells, photos and other artifacts, the museum offers a deeper understanding of the marine world. If you want to see every aquarium exhibit, carve out an hour for the best experience.
Traveling to the Garden
Unlike other more isolated attractions, Bagh-e-Bahu is located near Jammu's city center. Remarkably, it's equally distant from the railway or bus stand by about 2 to 2.5 miles. Travel from either location by minibus to arrive at the garden's entrance gate. It's clearly marked with a sign designed with plants spelling out "Bagh-e-Bahu."
Alternatively, take a minibus from the airport to the garden. It's only 5 miles away, which makes the travel time short and inexpensive. Upon arrival, relax in the garden or try the nearby cafeteria for a casual meal. Although it takes only a couple of hours to enjoy the garden, you might carve out an entire day to truly relax in these surroundings.
Bagh-e-Bahu is open every day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for a small entrance fee. Ideally, arrive early to avoid any crowds. With several terraces offering spectacular views, this garden offers a serene environment for meditating, photography and other pursuits during your Jammu and Kasmir getaway.
